Any other time we would tell you that navy blue paint, yellow wheels and a bright blue interior would be a recipe for disaster, but this is no ordinary car. Of course, Horacio Pagani could probably paint his cars any color combination he wanted and we’d still think it was awesome. The level of detail in each Zonda is extraordinary, and we never miss a chance to look one over in depth when we get the opportunity. Lucky for us, then, we stumbled on this Zonda at the Geneva Motor Show. The particular Zonda you see is the Tricolore, a special edition made to celebrate a squadron of the Italian air force named the Frecce Tricolori. The squadron is a demonstration team composed of nine planes and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Tricolore is painted to match the squadron’s planes, and the result is a stunningly beautiful Zonda. You can check out all of the car’s details in the high-res gallery below.

Porsche is set to introduce a car that proves that two almost parallel worlds can exist at the same time. The 918 Spyder concept looks a bit like a evolved Carrera GT but is in essence, a vastly different car. The 918 Spyder is powered by both a 500hp V8 and a pair of electric motors (located at each axle) that produce an additional 218hp. All this combined provides for a 3.2 second 100km/h sprint and a 315km/h top speed. On the contrary the 918 Spyder achieves 125km’s for every 3.8-liter of fuel and it emits just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer. If you’re confused, that just means the car is fast, not too thirsty and environmentally friendly.

To achieve such impressive range, the new Porsche supercar works as a parallel hybrid much like a Prius, that basic means that two powertrains, petrol and electric, can operate together or separately to power the wheels.

The entire system features four modes that configure the powertrain – E-Drive mode powers the car solely on electric power and apparently the 918 is able to last up to 25km’s just on electrons alone. Next up is Hybrid mode that utilises both powertrains and works best for everyday around town driving. The Sport Hybrid mode also uses both powertrains but increases power a bit more towards performance with most of the power going towards the rear wheels. Finally, there’s the Race Hybrid mode that literally means all out performance orientation. In fact, Porsche claims that the 918 Spyder is able to do the Nordschleiffe in less than 7:30 minutes. And to add to the excitement, there’s even a push-to-pass button that adds a bit of E-boost on the straights, and to keep the energy flowing, regenerative braking makes an appearance, much like the KERS systems in Formula One cars.

Inside, it may be very conceptual but Porsche says it offers a glimpse at future interiors of all Porsche’s. It may not be available for sale as yet, but the ideas behind the 918 Spyder are definately feasible, more information below.

Porsche Reveals High-Performance 918 Spyder Concept Highly Efficient and Ultra-Fast Plug-in Hybrid Super Sports Car Unveiled in Geneva

 Today, on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche unveiled an ultra-efficient, low-emission, mid-engine super sports car featuring hybrid and electric drive technology.

 The 918 Spyder concept combines high-tech racing features with electric-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities. For example, it is planned to provide an emission level of just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer on fuel consumption of only three liters/100 kilometers (equal to approximately 78 mpg U.S.), which is truly outstanding, even for an ultra-compact city car. This car, however, is intended to offer the performance of a super sports car with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph), and a lap time on the Nordschleife of N ?rburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This trio n? made up of Porschei?s new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery, and the two-seater high-performance 918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology n? clearly demonstrates not only the great bandwidth of this new drive technology, but also the innovative power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in hybrid drive.

The highly-innovative 918 Spyder concept car combines Porschei?s Intelligent Performance philosophy with the high-technology from motorsport, with classic but modern design to make a truly convincing statement.

 Innovative powertrain combines race-bred V8 engine with electric drive This open two-seater is powered by a high-revving V8 developing more than 500 horsepower and a maximum engine speed of 9,200 rpm n? as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 horsepower (160 kW).

The V8 combustion engine is the next step in the evolution of the highly successful 3.4- liter power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned mid-ship, in front of the rear axle, giving the car excellent balance and the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track.

Power is transmitted to the wheels by a seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that feeds the power of the electric drive system to the rear axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the wheels through a fixed transmission ratio.

The energy reservoir is a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery positioned behind the passenger cell. The big advantage of a plug-in hybrid is that the battery can be charged on the regular electrical network. A further point is that the cari?s kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy fed into the battery when applying the brakes, thus providing additional energy for fast and dynamic acceleration.

Driveri?s choice of four distinct driving modes A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose among four different running modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles. In the Hybrid mode, the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine as a function of driving conditions and requirements, offering a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the way to extra-powerful.

The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, but with the focus on performance. Most of the drive power goes to the rear wheels, with Torque Vectoring serving to additionally improve the cari?s driving dynamics.

In the Race Hybrid mode the drive systems are focused on pure performance with the highest standard of driving dynamics on the track, running at the limit to their power and dynamic output. With the battery sufficiently charged, a push-to-pass button feeds in additional electrical power (E-Boost), when overtaking or for even better performance.

With the hybrid drive system offering this wide range of individual modes and applications, the 918 Spyder is able either to achieve lap times comparable to those of a thoroughbred racing car, or the extremely low emissions and high fuel economy figures of a plug-in hybrid.

Advanced body structure and design offer more than just good looks Like the drivetrain, the lightweight body structure of the Porsche 918 Spyder also bears out the cari?s DNA carried over directly from motorsport: The modular structure with its monocoque bodyshell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP) and liberal use of magnesium and aluminum not only reduce weight to below 1,490 kg, or 3,285 lb, but also ensure supreme driving precision thanks to a high level of torsional stiffness.

Reminiscent of highly successful, legendary racing cars such as the Porsche 917 and the current Porsche RS Spyder, the 918 Spyder, with its design concept so typical of Porsche arouses powerful emotions. The combination of racing car dimensions, clearly structured design with perfectly balanced surfaces, and innovative details throughout, creates an ideal synthesis of form and function n? following Porschei?s design DNA.

The smooth balance of tradition and progress gives the car a powerful stance on the road. Variable aerodynamics, typical of Porsche, ensures both visionary and traditional highlights especially around the rear spoiler. The striking rear hoods extending out of the headrests, in turn, not only fulfill an aerodynamic function on the 918 Spyder, but also accommodate retractable air intakes with a ram air function.

High-tech interior provides glimpse into the future The driver and passenger are not only embedded in contoured sports bucket seats but also form part of the cockpit, which provides a synthesis of efficient functionality and ergonomic high-tech operation. Additionally, the cockpit offers a glimpse at the potential interior architecture of future Porsche super sports cars. The three free-standing circular dials for road speed (left), engine speed (middle) and energy management (right) would appear to come directly from a racing car in the e?60s, bearing out that unique philosophy of driver orientation so characteristic of Porsche.

The center console rises up towards the front in the 918 Spyder and houses a touch screen for intuitive control of the cari?s functions, serving to reduce the number of visible controls and maintain the principle of direct operation. The control units relevant to the driver are mainly concentrated on the three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, while the variable driving modes are supplemented by a switch enabling the driver to call up various drive programs and serving as the push-to-pass button for E-boosting. Instrument illumination, finally, varies from green for the consumption-oriented running modes to red for the performance-oriented driving programs.

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept also comes with further innovative functions such as the Range Manager. After being activated in the Center Display, the Range Manager uses the map in the navigation system to present the remaining range the car is able to cover, naturally allowing the driver to influence that range through the appropriate choice of power and performance. In cities with environmental alert areas the Range Manager also states whether the driver is able to reach a certain destination on electric power alone.

Applying this information and using further info on the availability and location of special energy filling stations, the driver is then able to choose his personal style of driving as well as the right battery charge and filling strategy.

Nothing on this car is second best. Carbon fibre is everywhere on the inside and out to achieve a weight of approx 1340 kilograms.

The 5.2-litre V10 produces 419kW (570 hp) at 540 Newton-metres of torque. It can do 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 325km/hr (if you can go that fast without killing yourself).

First off, yes its street-legal but it barely makes it. Its adorned with all the hardcore usuals like Recaro racing seats, 4-point seat belt system, a stainless steel role-over bars with seat belt attachment, hand-held fire extinguisher, height adjustable suspension system, and ceramic-based brakes, all options of course.

The Abt R8 GT R will like every other new model you have been reading about this past few weeks, make its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and this tuned Audi R8 V10 will be built in a limited number of 25 units.

Company founder Christian Abt says, “the R8 GT R is an uncompromising racing car for the road, and provides maximum performance”, and it certainly does, on paper at least. The 5.2-liter V10 is already a very powerful engine with 518hp stock, but Abt found that mediocre and got its hands dirty to further herd a massive 612hp out of the same engine. This results in a 100km/h run of 3.2 seconds and a 200km/h run that is seen off in only 9.9 seconds.

The R8 GT R has of course been treated to the usual strip down and carbon fiber dressing, components like the bonnet, the front apron, side mirrors, door panels, rear apron, the rear wing, and the tailgate are all made of carbon fiber. This according to Abt, shaves 100kg off te car.

Sure, the R8 is no lame duck, and this is even more so once the sports car has been tuned by ABT Sportsline. The result is a real model athlete, which does not just ooze power, but also doesn’t have a single gram of fat on its body. With the limited version R8 GT R (with only 25 units available) engineers and designers have gone one logical step further: experience from motorsport flowed into the design, and all the components have been systematically trimmed to ensure a light-weight construction and optimal weight distribution. As a result not just the bonnet, front and rear aprons, the adjustable rear wing or the tailgate are made of carbon, but the outline edge on the rear, the external mirrors and the door panel are also made of the same material. The successful motorsport racer indicates his responsibility for the development of this extraordinary vehicle and is impressed with the result. “I recommend trying the GT R on a racing track from time to time, as the car is great fun to drive there”, says the General Manager of ABT who is responsible for technology. The adjustable front panel allows sports inserts; the ABT driver overalls, helmet, racing shoes and gloves are just as much as part of the effective GT R special equipment as an on-board video system and the expandable data module.

The well-trained sports car has enormous performance potential: instead of the series-standard 525HP (386 kW), the 5.2 FSI in the ABT R8 GT R provides a massive 620HP (456 kW) and as a result the light car travels extremely quickly: the top speed is 325 km/h, it does 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and the GT R reaches the 200km/h mark in a mere 9.9 seconds. In order to ensure that the power can be optimally applied on the road and on the race track, height-adjustable ABT Sports suspension and adjustable dampers are standard on the ABT R8 GT R. The ceramic brake system with modified brake pads has been adjusted to meet the enormous performance potential of the super sports car. The extremely light ABT CR alloys round off the package. 2010 is the year of expansion and what better avenue to expand into then PSS-TV!

Yep! That’s right with a launch date soon to be announced we can confirm that PSS will have a weekly time slot on newly created channel 44 or WTV.

The show will of course be based around the local automotive scene by covering as many events as we can get to and all the top end rides we can find.

And this is where you come in… one of the segments on the show is a weekly feature car, thus we need 12 bombed rides.   These rides can be imports, hot rods, bikes, muscle cars, new school, old school it doesn’t matter,  the more variety the better so if you think you have a something that will suit the show  then we want to know about it.

You know, the stuff that looks mad when it’s pulled off and even better when they stuff up? Yeah that stuff and they are good at it.

But it’s not always about the stunts and the riders… Here’s a teaser from their next season on what goes on at the HGM HQ and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

For two days, there were burnouts, power skids, and crazy cruising  in fact, anyway you can show off your horsepower, you could. A total of 7 burnout sessions plus the exhibition sessions and the cruises were nothing short of full lap burnouts.

Saturday Morning was the Show and Shine judging. Thankfully this was done very early before any of the cars hit the track.

The two day event had an awesomely laid back atmosphere, with the dyno working all day both days, the tyre fitters were run off their feet. One entrant went through 12 sets of tyres in the two days. The Go to Whoa was more GO than WHOA but was really entertaining with a lot of the old school muscle outshining the ABS equipped cars.

The cars attending were serious, everything from a turbo rotary to George Separovich’s NUTTR ute and Fred Watson’s FEAR Monaro. 6:71 Superchargers were everywhere and on everything including a Lexus V8.

The main event was definitely the burnouts. There were 2 classes; NA and Blown. Saturday saw the two qualifying rounds for each class to find the top 30 NA cars and top 20 Blown cars. Sunday was finals time for both classes along with a freestyle session for anyone who didn’t enter previously or didn’t make it into the finals.

The attrition rate wasn’t as bad as some events, although Fred Watson did terminate FEAR’s engine spectacularly During Saturday Nights exhibition Burnouts.

The cruises were definitely a slow paced cruise, well the pace was slow but the engines on every carere banging of the limiter with the Collie Motorplex billowing tyre smoke from every inch of the track. Something entrants aren’t allowed to do at any other Perth Event. There were rules, but not many and Fry the Tyres was permitted anywhere but in the pits.

Gary and Debbie have committed Gazzanats to the Collie Motorplex for another 4 years, and even though this was only the first, there weren’t really all that many problems, which no doubt will be rectified for next years event. As for the entrants, most are saying it is the best event Perth drivers have had, even eclipsing PC. And the majority have said they will be back next year.

For the spectator, there is something going on all day each day, with plenty of vantage points the entire length of the track, plenty of seating for the burnouts and the bar, well that’s right next to the Burnout Pad. What more could you want.

From an “official” photographers point of view, the perfect event. None of the rules normally put on us at these sorts of events. We could get as close as we liked as long as we weren’t on the actual track or pad. Which means closer better quality photos than ever before.

From my point of view, its well worth booking accommodation and going down for the weekend. From an entrants point of view, if you want to show your muscle and shred tyres for a weekend, this is one event you don’t want to miss.
