Formula One world championship leader Mark Webber and his Red Bull Renault are gearing up to smash the Barbagallo Raceway lap record as part of an inaugural ‘Perth Festival of Speed’ on Sunday, November 28.

WA Sporting Car Club competitions manager Raymond Shaw has confirmed that promoter and former European touring car racer Terry Mader has booked the track and secured the speedy Australian.

Organisers have quietly obtained national and international safety approvals for Webber to attempt the fastest lap ever at Barbagello.

Mark Webber will headline the Perth Festival of Speed in November.

“We’ve checked with our governing body – the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, checked with FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) and Formula One to ensure the activity could take place, and that the venue is safe for the activity,” Mr Shaw revealed.

“That’s all been confirmed and okay.”

Mr Shaw said Webber would do three demonstration runs.

It will be the first time WA has seen a current F1 car in full flight since hosting the largely domestic Australian Grand Prix during the state’s 150th birthday celebrations in 1979.

“It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities,” Mr Shaw said.

Webber’s Sydney-based manager Ben Hartman revealed only that his high profile client would be “in Australia” at the time.

Mader would not confirm Webber’s participation, but an approvals document seen by oneperth.com.au confirms the F1 ace has agreed to come.

The festival is exactly two weeks after the last race of the F1 season in Abu Dhabi. If Webber keeps winning, Perth F1 fans could see the first Aussie world champ since Alan Jones in 1980 in action on their home soil.

Mader said that several lap records would be attempted on November 28, tyre smoking was on the cards, and “a couple of V8 Super Car teams” would enter the fray.

The event will be a supercharged version of England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

“Goodwood is a bit too much of a vintage event,” said West Australian Mader who spent eight years racing in Europe before returning to Perth three yeas ago.

“What we’re aiming for is 80 per cent modern-generation, (the) latest Porsches, Ferraris, power cars and bikes.”

Webber is tipped by 1959/60/66 world drivers’ champion Sir Jack Brabham to become only the third Australian to top the end of year rankings, behind he and Jones.

The hum of Webber’s Red Bull Renault is set to improve the moods of speed freaks saddened by the recent cancellation of next year’s Red Bull Air Race series due to safety concerns.

The festival will be a boon for Barbagallo which has received $10.5 million in government funding to secure upgrades to enable a five-year return of V8 Supercar racing from next year. The 2010 event was dumped in February with then Supercars acting CEO Shane Howard labelling facilities “third-world”.

In 2011, Mader intends to transfer the festival from Barbagallo to a temporary street track comprising Riverside Drive, Terrace Road and Victoria Avenue in the Perth CBD.

Queanbeyan-born Webber is enjoying his finest Formula 1 season, winning four of the 12 Grands Prix completed this year. With seven races to go, he sits just four points clear of MacLaren driver Lewis Hamilton.

A new video documenting the Pagani Zonda R’s 6-minute 47-second Nurburgring lap time has been released. The Zonda R lap time shatters the one set some time ago by the Ferrari 599XX at 6:58. Even though the Zonda R is built off of a street-car design, it is not a street-legal car therefore this will not go down in the record book for fastest production car around the Ring.

Still, the Radical SR8LM holds the record for fastest street-legal car around the Nurburgring with a recorded time of 6:48.

The Pagani Zonda R is pure race-car tipping the scale at only 2,359lbs. The Zonda R is capable of a mad dash to 60mph from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds mainly due to its 750 horsepower and 524 ft-lbs of torque 6.0-liter AMG V12 engine. Through a friend of the family, he clearly remembers coming home one night after having been to the movies and walking in and seeing an electric guitar and an amp sitting there in the corner of the room. Thus then begins the George Larin music rollercoaster ride! With his new electric guitar he began mastering blues and rock and roll, but then it was time for another blast of guitar inflicted fury when he heard Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. So armed with all of this guitar knowledge, he left his home in the peaceful surroundings of the country side and headed for the big smoke, where he soon began to play regular gigs with a variety of different acts. One of the many memorable moments of this part of his musical journey, was relocating to the U.K to perform with a guitar pop outfit and then later over to Germany where he recorded one of the most slickest sounding demo’s he had ever heard with the precision thrash metal outfit, BACKWATER. Even though success had come close but never close enough, it was when he returned back to Melbourne, Australia and joined up with local metal legends, TARAMIS, that an album, International supports and countless tours up and down the coast, made him feel like all of his hard work had finally paid off. With that chapter of his career finished, a new one began when he played guitar for the female fronted hard rock outfit, AMETHYST who also released an album and had great reviews worldwide.

George still resides in Melbourne and has a studio set up at home where he has recorded two metal albums under the banner of LARIN. He is currently hard at work on a new project, which is a guitar instrumental album, tentatively entitled, “Music Without Words”, which showcases different styles of music, moods and guitar textures, due for release in 2009, this is yet another chapter in the life, that is the George Larin music rollercoaster ride!….all aboard!

Hiromu Naruse, 67, was driving a prototype of the upcoming Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition supercar on highway 410 in Germany when he hit a BMW 3 Series head on. The BMW’s two occupants, both BMW test drivers, survived the crash but one was reportedly taken to hospital in a critical condition. Naruse who has been a Toyota employee since 1967 died at the scene. Reports suggest that Naruse-san may have lost control of the high performance Lexus LFA and then swerved into oncoming traffic. At the time of writing, investigations were continuing and German police had not yet established the cause of the accident. Naruse-san was Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda’s personal driver and was also involved in the research and development of the Lexus LFA. He was a key player in the development of many of Toyota’s sports cars over the years, including the famous 2000GT, which made its production debut in 1967.
